Malawi might not border an ocean but it does have one mammoth lake so even though it’s World Ocean Day, we’re celebrating the worlds 9th largest lake instead!
The focus today is on protecting our oceans but this translates to our lakes too.
In our Fish Conservation project, one of our aims is that fishermen stop using monofilament nets. These are illegal but because they are difficult for fish to see, fishermen are using them to catch more fish. However, when these are lost in the lake, they don’t decompose and continue to catch fish for many years – something known as ghost fishing.
We are working with fishing communities to protect fish breeding areas, ensure closed seasons are observed and ban the use of mosquito nets for fishing too.
