Today is #WorldFisheriesDay and we’re working to improve the fish stocks in Lake Malawi. Overfishing in Malawi is a huge problem and one of the biggest challenges is the use of mosquito nets as fishing nets. Aid organisations hand out mosquito nets, some of which are sold to fishermen who sew them together into long nets. These nets catch fish of all sizes, including baby fish drastically reducing the fish population.
Ripple Africa are empowering communities to own both the problem and the solution. Our mantra is to keep it simple and it will work. Now Fish Conservation Committees are empowered to manage the fishing in their areas.
Thanks to these committees, fishermen are already catching larger and more fish, which is improving their income as well as protecting fish resources for future generations.
