It’s World Bee Day! We love honey and are lucky that we have some hives near our headquarters in Malawi. Maston, our Fruit Tree Project Manager, is also our bee keeper and he ensures the hives are looked after.
A few of the fruit tree community groups and forest conservation committees have bee hives as it helps protects existing trees as people are too scared as they don’t want to get stung.
African bees are particularly aggressive as “their natural environment has far more predators looking to destroy hives for honey” – something Geoff and Nikki from our UK team found out when Maston was harvesting honey!
There are more community groups and committees keen to have bee hives, something we’d like to explore in the future.
