The fishing closed season in Nkhata Bay District is from November to January however there’s a natural closed season, usually between June and July, when the Mwera winds occur.
The Mwera winds are dangerous and with many fishermen not being able to swim nor their boats equipped with life jackets, for the majority, it is too risky even considering going out when the lake is rough.
So on days when Lake Malawi is calm, fishermen rush to the lake to take advantage of the fact that they can go out fishing – like these two artisanal fishers who went out to catch chambo fish.
