The Family Planning and Sexual Health team ran community talks with parents of school children to understand the challenges they face and to get their thoughts on students dropping out of school due to teen pregnancies and marriage.
Watson and Khumbo explained, “We learnt that the main challenge parents face is that they can not afford everything their children need for school especially as they have to contribute to the schools building fund.
“Once we understood the concerns, we carried out two demonstrations. The first was population growth over the years and the second, financial planning – so having children you can afford to take care off.
“Interestingly, once these demonstrations took place, parents saw the value in smaller families and for their own children, the need for them to be able to access family planning methods without judgement.”
