Work is underway to build another teacher’s house.
Although the necessity for teachers’ houses might seem strange, the reality is that, without these, the school cannot attract new teachers who will stay. Being a very rural primary school is already a disadvantage as most teachers prefer being in towns.
The houses don’t only provide the teachers with a home on-site but they provide free security for the school too. Most teachers are poorly paid and will often decide to leave in search of a better-equipped school where accommodation is provided to save transport and rental costs.
Matete Primary School is the most remote of the six schools that we support and is located many miles from the main road as it serves children living in the hills above the town – teachers have to walk long distances to get to work.
When finished, this will be the third teachers house for the school.
