Chemical pesticides are expensive in Malawi as is fertilizer. We have been teaching community fruit tree clubs how to make their own natural fertilizer by making Mbeya Manure, so now it was time to turn the training to pesticides.
One natural method is to use chilli. Community fruit tree clubs are being shown how to pound the chilli’s and then transfer them to water cans and add water. They leave the water for 30 minutes before straining it and then using the chilli-infused water on their crops.
Whilst very effective to deter pests, it was also quite the challenge for the person pounding the chilli’s!
