It’s rare that our work and impact in Malawi makes mainstream media but when it does, and when others see the positive impact that we compared to large NGOs are making, it makes us proud and want to shout about it.
This article, written by Greg Mills for the Daily Maverick, covers the extensive challenges facing Malawians and the reasons why it remains one of the poorest countries in the world. It highlights reasons such as high debt levels, lack of local ownership and the mismanagement of aid.
Although Ripple Africa is an NGO, Greg Mills recognised the positive impact that our approach has had with communities in Malawi.
He writes: “The Ripple experience highlights the importance of getting the incentives right, of the need for local buy-in, and of the complementary role that can, in the right conditions, be played by outsiders. Ripple shows that by starting small, strengthening local voices in the places where change is needed, and by sticking with it over a long time, the most desperate and seemingly impossible of circumstances can be changed. If outsiders can do this, and avoid amplifying their own voices to advance their own careers and interests, then trust can be enhanced and progress made.”
It is definitely worth a read so take a little time out to fully read and digest, and know that your donations to Ripple Africa really do make a difference. Thank you.
