We have often talked about how biodiverse Lake Malawi is and how it is home to over 900 endemic species of cichlids but we haven’t shouted about the amazing diversity of animals and plant life in Malawi’s forests.
Malawi has over 1,000 different species of amphibians, birds, mammals and reptiles and at least 3,765 species of plants.
However, between 1990 and 2010, Malawi lost 16.9% of its forest cover, or around 659,000 ha. This makes our Forest Conservation project vital to not only help communities protect the trees to maintain regular rainfall and prevent soil erosion, but to ensure a home for the thousands of butterflies, birds, snakes, bats and other animals living in the forests.
