Our eight pre-schools are run by enthusiastic teachers who love working with the children. They also love learning new concepts so all 27 teachers and our Pre-school Coordinator Charles Domingo were involved in a Rainbow Play training event which included a four day away workshop followed up by a two-day refresher at their pre-schools.
The training coordinator Nina said, “Thank you so much for sending your team! It was so great to meet them and hear how they’re running the pre-schools and have some of the structures in place. Charles was amazing.”
During the follow-up training, all of the pre-school teachers met at our training centre for a refresher before the trainers, Dominque and Evie, visited each pre-school to see the training in action and give any final guidance and support. The pre-school teachers will be attending other training courses later in the year including one specifically to learn about disabilities and how to adapt and involve children with a disability in to pre-school life.
Sweet Potato Programme
The pre-school teachers grow sweet potatoes which they prepare and feed to the children every day across our eight pre-schools. The teachers have received an agricultural training session to learn about the improved orange-fleshed sweet potato, how best to prepare the land ahead of planting and how to plant the vines. The bundles of 100 vines have also been delivered to each school too ready for planting.
Pre-school Maintenance
The pre-schools which required repairs and maintenance were Chitungulu, Chiomba, Matete 1, Mwaya and Mazembe. Works included repairing cracks in the floor and walls, repainting, drainage repairs, termite treatment and putting up shelves in one of the storage cupboards. We had to do some additional work at Chitungulu Pre-School as the timbers for the roof needed replacing due to termites, but the new timbers have been treated and a new roof is now on the pre-school.
All of the above was made possible thanks to funding from Fonthill Foundation.
