To celebrate International Women’s Day we’d like to introduce you to Ellen.
Ellen is one of our pre-school teachers but her story with Ripple Africa started much earlier. Founders Geoff and Liz met Ellen one day in 2003 near our headquarters at Mwaya Beach where she explained that she was having to walk 12km each way to school as there wasn’t a local secondary school in the Mwaya area.
Geoff and Liz visited the school she attended to see for themselves and discovered two very dilapidated buildings which were overcrowded with students. So what did Ripple Africa do? We responded to this need by building Kapanda Community Day Secondary School.
Whilst too late for Ellen to attend, this school now has more than 500 students enrolled and since building the first classrooms in 2008, today there is a science and computer lab, girls dormitory and study room too.
Ellen is proud of this achievement for the community. She has been teaching at our pre-schools for over 10 years, sharing her knowledge with the next generation.
