James Mhone was born in 1950 and has seven children and five grandchildren. He is devoted to farming and is a lead farmer so is busy multiplying the sweet potato vines so he can share them with his neighbours in the village.
He said, “I wouldn’t go back to the local varieties because these orange-fleshed sweet potatoes are rich in vitamin A and I have experienced a high yield too. My children like these potatoes too.”
Our sweet potato farming project is a simple and sustainable approach to overcome malnutrition, a major health issue for mothers and children in Malawi. The farmers start with 100 tubers each but, when they harvest, they have enough stems to keep some for their family and to share the rest with other local families to multiply the number of people benefiting.
