For children in Nkhata Bay District, our fuel-efficient cookstoves are just a way of life now and not the new technology that it was for thousands of women in the District.
Recently we met Rose, 15, the daughter of a Chief. She has been helping her mother cook from a young age and all she can remember is the Changu Changu Moto cookstove.
She said, “We have had our Changu Changu Moto since I was five years old. My mother tells me it is safer compared to the traditional three stone fire that she cooked on before. I know that it saves wood and that is good as it saves us time collecting firewood.”
As our fuel-efficient cookstove project continues and expands in neighbouring Districts, this improved cooking method will become the way of life for thousands of children as they grow up. This will reduce the risk of people returning to three stone fires, helping both people and the environment.
