We are always so grateful when you take it upon yourselves to fundraise for our projects in Malawi. Catherine, with members of her church, recently raised just over £530 to repair broken boreholes.
We have used the funds to repair shallow wells in Mazembe village, a village Catherine is familiar with following her trip to visit Ripple Africa several years ago. She learnt of the problems that they were having with accessing clean water and really wanted to help.
Mazembe has more than 2,000 residents but there was only one working borehole. As a result, wells had been dug near the wetland areas meaning untreated water was being used to wash plates, clothes and for bathing.
Although the borehole is only a 10 minute walk for most of the families, women can spend around half an hour pumping water – and that’s after they have queued while waiting for their neighbours to get water.
However, we are pleased to say that the village now has working boreholes and shallow wells so they are able to use clean water again.
