Flora is 18 and was in Standard Seven at primary school until the government closed all schools in Malawi due to the pandemic.
Learning about coronavirus and the necessity to wash her hands regularly was a concern to Flora as her community has had no working borehole for fresh clean water for the past four years. As a result, Flora would have to wake up early in the morning to fetch water from a nearby village 35 minutes away. Not only did this add pressure on the neighbouring village but it was affecting Flora’s school work as she was missing some classes in order to ensure there was water at home.
However, as part of our coronavirus awareness campaign we have managed to fix 240 boreholes including the one in Flora’s village.
She said, “I am very happy because when schools reopen, I will not miss class anymore, and our community now has access to clean water which means we can wash our hands regularly.”
