Last week we shared the wonderful achievements of six students but not every child in Malawi has the opportunity to finish primary school let alone the dream of going to university.
This fishing community often has a high number of school drop outs due to the long distance to walk to school. The closest school is six kilometres away. So our Family Planning and Sexual Health team have been spending time with this community to support and educate on a number of issues affecting the area. Along with there being a high number of children dropping out from school, underage pregnancy is common here along with alcohol and drug abuse.
The team are establishing the best way to encourage the youth to return and stay in school as well as understanding the dangers of substance abuse, family planning, finances and similar topics. They will continue to return to this area as it will take time for the youngsters to build trust and open up.
