Our Forest Conservation team in Choma Hills in Mzimba have been working with Forest Conservation Committees and Forestry Department to find those illegally producing and selling charcoal.
In a bid to conserve the remaining forests, various initiatives are running here including our tree planting project and helping householders to build their own fuel-efficient cookstoves. However, there are still people that illegally produce charcoal.
On this latest patrol, 145 bags of charcoal and two motorbikes were confiscated and the patrol led to the conviction of a charcoal trader.
Jobs in rural areas of Malawi are scarce which is one the reasons why we have introduced our tree planting project. This offers families the ability to not only grow indigenous trees, but also fruit trees and quick-growing trees that can be harvested for timber, enabling the family to improve their diet and make money.
Not only are we passionate about conserving existing forests but we are passionate about helping Malawians create brighter futures for themselves too.
