Yusufu Binali is a 66-year-old Malawian fisherman whose fishing career started in 1971. He is married and has five children and following the introduction of our Fish for Tomorrow project, is looking forward to a brighter future for his children. In recent years Yusufu had turned to using illegal fishing gears to catch all sizes of usipa fish but since our fish conservation project began in his area, he now uses legal fishing nets.
He said, “I love fishing in Lake Malawi and now more than ever because I am catching bigger usipa and earning more money. This means I can pay my children’s school fees for them and hopefully save enough money to open a small grocery shop.”
