Working in partnership with a local youth group, we organised an event to share information about family planning and sexual health matters with youngsters in the community.
Often in Malawi, when people hear about family planning they think it only relates to married couples. Therefore, this event offered the opportunity for young people to ask questions and learn more about what family planning means.
Watson, a trained health worker said, “There are teenagers enrolled at primary school who although yet to finish school, are in their late teens and some are engaging in sexual activities. This event gave them the opportunity to learn how they can protect themselves from unplanned pregnancies, sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) and HIV so that they can finish their education. We explained that there are different family planning methods available for free at their local clinics and hospitals.”
